ECOC 2025, held at the Bella Center in Copenhagen, Denmark, brought together the global optical communications community for three days of technical presentations, product demonstrations, and industry networking. The event's dominant theme was the intersection of AI compute demands and optical interconnect innovation.
Key highlights from ECOC 2025:
• 800G AI & DC interconnect showcase: Multiple exhibitors, including Chinese manufacturers like GIGALIGHT, presented 800G QSFP-DD/OSFP FR8 modules using single-fiber WDM technology—enabling higher port density in AI training clusters.
• 1.6T progress update: Several technical papers reported advances in 200 Gbps per lane electrical signaling, a key enabler for 1.6T module development. Signal integrity challenges at 200 Gbps remain, but equalization and coding techniques are showing promise.
• Open optical networking: A dedicated session explored the operational benefits of Open Line Systems for carrier DCI, with real-world deployment data from European operators showing measurable cost savings.
• Sustainability focus: With AI data centers projected to consume 8% of global electricity by 2030, multiple sessions explored energy-efficient optical technologies, including silicon photonics, LPO, and immersion cooling.
SZVAN's team used ECOC 2025 to strengthen European distributor relationships, demonstrate our latest 800G and coherent module products, and gather market intelligence on 1.6T development timelines that will inform our R&D investment decisions for 2026 and beyond.
